Lot 458
1816 N-2 R1. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Attractive lustrous light steel brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and at least 10% of the mint red remaining. No stains or carbon spots. The only marks are a dull nick on the forelock and a faint hairline scratch in the field before the nose. M-LDS with rim cud breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a smaller one between stars 11 & 12. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that was discovered soon after the end of the US Civil War. Our grade is MS62+. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.

Lot 463
1817 N-16 R1 15-Star Obverse, Obverse Brockage. NGC graded VF-20. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown fading to medium chocolate brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a light rim bruise at star 3 and another even lighter one at star 11. EDS. A spectacular obverse brockage mint error, made even more significant because we are left with 30 clearly defined stars. The normal and incuse (brockage) designs are perfectly aligned with each other but the strike was very slightly off center to K-9. An obverse brockage error is created when a struck cent fails to eject from the press and a new planchet is inserted and struck. The obverse side of the second planchet is struck by the obverse die while the "reverse" of the second planchet is pressed into the obverse of the previously struck cent, thereby creating the incuse design. While this type of mint error is quite rare, having it occur on the unique 15-star obverse design is indeed remarkable. Destined to be a highlight of any collection. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8. The attribution and Mervis provenance are shown on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.

1825 N-5 R7 G4. Glossy chocolate with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No roughness or significant marks, just worn. The only defects are a few tiny rim nicks right of the date, a small chip out of the rim at star 2, and a pair of dull scratches up from the right top of the T in CENT. The date is clear and the legends are nearly complete except for the upper half of UNITED ST, which is worn into the rim. This is the 8th example discovered of this extremely rare variety and only the second we have offered at auction (the first example of 1825N5 offered at auction, also graded G4, was lot 298 in our 9/22/2013 sale where it brought $12,650). This die variety was first listed as the "A-5" die variety in the 1883 reference written by Frank D. Andrews, "An Arrangement of United States Copper Cents, 1816-1857." Howard R. Newcomb, in his 1944 reference "United States Copper Cents 1816-1857," built on the work of Andrews but listed the A-5 variety (N-5 in the Newcomb reference) as "unknown." John D. Wright advanced the study of this series in his 1992 reference "The Cent Book." In his chapter on the cents of 1825 he stated "There is no Number 5" as none had surfaced in spite of Andrews' 1883 listing and over 100 years of searching. Then, in 2011 an example was discovered on eBay by Tom Deck of Alabama. A careful examination of Tom's cent by John D. Wright and your cataloger confirmed Tom's coin was indeed the "missing" Andrews/Newcomb #5 die variety. It is a product of the N-4 obverse die in a later die state and the reverse of the N-10 die variety in an earlier die state. Since Tom's discovery and subsequent announcement by Paul Gilkes in the 23 January 2012 edition of "Coin World" there have been 7 additional examples confirmed for the A-5/N-5 die variety, including the coin offered here. The condition census of the 8 known pieces is 12(2)-4(4)-3(2). Clearly this piece is the new "key" to a complete series of business strike 1816-1839 cents by die variety.

Lot 501
1831 N-11 R2 Medium Reverse Letters VF25+. Clipped Planchet. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with underlying frost in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The only marks, and they are not at all significant, are a speck of verdigris low on the neck and a minor rim bruise under the first 1 in the date. Scarce TDS with a cud break at TES in STATES, and the cud fills the top of the S. In addition there is a small mint-made planchet clip that affects the dentils at star 9 and the opposing dentils over the C in AMERICA.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Lot 502
1831 N-14 R4 Large Reverse Letters AU50+. Sharpness near mint state with just a light touch of friction on the highpoints, but there is a small patch of roughness under star 1 and another at the right top of the E in ONE. Otherwise this cent is free of defects. Lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red showing in protected areas on both sides. MDS. The rim cud at star 9 is clear and fine radial die flowlines show outside the wreath. A nice example of a scarce variety that's difficult to find in high grade. A single mint state example and only a very few graded AU are known placing this piece high in the condition census.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
